How To Dispose Of A Swollen Lithium Battery

2026 07/09

A swollen lithium battery must be removed from service immediately. Swelling is more common in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries because internal gas can form after overheating, overcharging, aging, or physical damage. HOLITH mainly manufactures primary Li-MnO2 batteries, which do not normally swell during correct use. Any primary cell showing bulging, deformation, leakage, unusual heat, or odor should still be treated as damaged.

Safe Disposal Steps

Do not charge, puncture, crush, bend, open, or place the battery in household waste. Avoid pressing on the battery when removing it from equipment.

  1. Turn off the device and disconnect external power.
  2. Move the equipment away from heat, flames, and combustible materials.
  3. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
  4. Remove the battery only when it can be done without force.
  5. Cover exposed terminals with nonconductive tape to reduce short-circuit risk.
  6. Place the battery in a nonconductive container away from metal objects.
  7. Contact an authorized battery recycling facility or hazardous-waste service.
  8. Follow local requirements for storage, packaging, and transportation.

A hot, smoking, hissing, or rapidly expanding battery presents an immediate fire risk. Evacuate the area and contact local emergency services rather than attempting to handle it.

Preventing Battery Damage in Product Development

Equipment using a HOLITH CR123A 3V primary lithium battery should match the cell’s electrical limits. This model has a nominal capacity of 1700mAh, a maximum continuous current of 1500mA, a maximum pulse current of 3000mA, and an operating range from minus 40°C to 70°C.

During OEM and ODM development, HOLITH evaluates discharge current, pulse duration, installation direction, terminal design, connector type, operating temperature, storage conditions, and packaging. Manufacturing checkpoints include incoming material inspection, electrode preparation, automated assembly, sealing, aging, voltage screening, internal resistance testing, and sampled discharge verification.

Working directly with a manufacturer provides access to batch records, traceability, engineering support, and corrective-action control. A trader may arrange supply but usually cannot directly adjust production parameters or investigate process deviations.

Bulk Supply and Compliance Checklist

Before approving mass production, confirm:

  • Cell chemistry and device load profile
  • Approved samples and inspection criteria
  • Sealing, leakage, and deformation controls
  • Lot codes and traceability records
  • Terminal protection and export packaging
  • UN 38.3 test documentation and MSDS
  • RoHS, CE, and destination-market requirements
  • Procedures for damaged or rejected batteries

IEC 60086-4:2025 defines safety tests for primary lithium batteries under intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. UN transport rules classify damaged or defective lithium batteries separately and may require specialized packaging and handling.

HOLITH operates automated production and testing equipment with annual output exceeding 40 million batteries, supporting stable specifications, customized configurations, and controlled bulk supply.
